Frequently Asked Questions

  • Baccarat
  • Blackjack
    • When do you restart your count in blackjack? Restart your count after every shuffle. If you have to ask this question, you really need to research the subject a little more: Counting cards.
    • What is the play strategy for a six deck shoe game? Standard 6 deck, 6 deck hit soft 17, 6 deck with surrender, and make your own chart. All of these charts are for blackjack that pays 3:2, and not the more recent popular and perverted 6:5 payout.
    • What is the risk of ruin in blackjack? Risk of ruin in blackjack is 100%. If you're a great card counter with a big wad of cash, risk of ruin in blackjack is still very high, more likely higher than 75%. Using the "short run risk of ruin" concept? Be careful, because you can always fool yourself into thinking the RoR is much lower than it actually is. Blackjack link, risk of ruin discussion, and risk of ruin applet.
    • How many decks are used in casino blackjack? Varies. Typically 1-8. The rules also vary widely.
    • How do I deal a pitch game of blackjack? Dealer's left to right. If you have an ace, ask for insurance. Check for blackjack. Also check for blackjack if you have a face card or ten. If you have blackjack, settle all bets. If not, play left to right, allow each player to play his hand, if he busts take his money. Then play dealer's hand. Settle all wins and losses.
    • Do some counters track aces separately when playing blackjack? Several count strategies involve keeping a separate "side count" on aces. Although with most this is optional. There really is no magic answer about how to do this. It just takes practice and a good memory.
  • Comps
    • How does a casino calculate comps? For slots: "For slot clubs, this calculation is easy to obtain because the exact amount a player has wagered is tracked electronically. (Of course, it has no effect on your wins or losses.) Most of the time, the method used to calculate slot club points is available to the player. Check at the players' club desk for that information. Typically, a player will get so many points for every $100 bet and can eventually trade in points for free stuff or cash. Slot club rules vary, so if you plan to play slots check around for the best deals. Also keep an eye out for promotions offering double and triple points."

For table games: "For table games, the comps calculation is a little different. Comps are calculated manually. Your play is graded with several variables considered including: Time played, House edge of game, Average wager, Number hands/decisions per hour, Skill of the player. What is happening when your play is being graded is that the casino is trying to determine how much they expect you to lose. This is the basis of the value of your comp. If, for example, you are playing a game with a 2% house edge that does not involve skill and you are betting $5 a pop and around $300 an hour, your expected loss is $6 an hour. The casino will typically award you $2-$3 worth of comps for that hour of play that can be redeemed for meals, rooms, and other stuff. Normally, however, comps earned at the tables can't be redeemed for cash." Info on Comps
  • Craps
    • What are loaded dice? Loaded dice are dice that have one side weighted down, usually with led, making some combinations more frequent. In street dice, this may be a problem. But not in a casino. The dice are checked often.
    • Can people cheat by sliding the dice? Sliding the dice is a way of cheating in private craps games. The felt on the craps tables in casinos counters this, as does a requirement to "bump" the dice.
    • I'm looking for a craps table graphic or image and/or wager chart. Clickable image, 10 best/worst bets
    • What is the risk of ruin in craps? Casino craps is a negative expectancy game no matter how you slice it. By using the real definition of risk of ruin and taking into account a huge bankroll advantage for the casino, risk of ruin in craps is 100%. If you use what I call a short run risk of ruin, or "session ruin", you can get a reasonable risk of ruin figure by pretending the house bankroll is much lower.
  • Miscellaneous
    • What is the objective of the casino? To take all your money.
    • What is meant by a 'disadvantage' in gambling? When the odds of winning a game do not match the payout, someone is at a disadvantage. It should also be mentioned that a player with much greater resources will have a significant advantage even if the game is fair.

  • Risk of Ruin
    • What is gambler's ruin or risk of ruin? Risk of ruin means: what is the likelihood that player A or B will go broke in a contest, where player A has a certain amount of money, player B has a certain amount of money, and one or the other has a statistical advantage (or not), and the game is played until one or the other is broke. Generally, in casinos, all games are 100% risk of ruin for the player. Risk of ruin discussion, risk of ruin applet.
    • How do you calculate risk of ruin in poker? This can be estimated in a head to head game if you assume that the two players have the same skill and if you know the bankrolls of both players. An approach to take for games with more than two players may be to weight each player's bankroll against the combined bankrolls of the other players. See the basic calculation for risk of ruin.
    • What is the risk of ruin with slot machines? 100%. Even in games where the payback is 100%, the ROR is still over 99%. If a machine existed that paid back at 102%, the player would still have a 67% chance at ruin assuming an infinite bankroll for the house.
    • What is the risk of ruin in craps? 100%. All negative expectancy games in a casino are 100% risk of ruin. People seem to be looking for a different answer, but I really don't know what else to tell them. Against a house with a nearly infinite bankroll and a solid mathematical edge, risk of ruin is certain. But this is due to the definition of risk of ruin. If we water the definition down some, and pretend the house has only $500 or $1000, and that we have $500 or $1000, then we have a fighting chance.
    • What is the risk of ruin in blackjack? Let's pretend that somehow the player gets a 2% edge over the house, which would be an unrealistic dream advantage, no doubt. But for the sake of argument, you just want to double your money, so that if you have $100, you leave with $200, the $100 you came with and the $100 you took from the house. Let's further say your average wager is $10. Your risk of ruin is still 40% with a 2% advantage! If your aim is to leave with $300, your risk of ruin jumps to 53%. Go for $500 and it is 62%. If we pretend that blackjack is a fair game, with neither the house nor player having an advantage, then the above scenarios produce ror of 50%, 67%, 80%. And we come up with all of this by 'tweaking' the definition of risk of ruin by pretending the house has a smaller bankroll than it actually has.
  • Roulette
    • Is there any way to predict the outcome of roulette with a spin analyzer or clocking? No. Roulette is random. The clocking concept is nonsense. It is not possible to predict the outcome of a roulette spin. Roulette is a losing game.
    • How many spaces are on a roulette wheel? American Roulette = 18 black, 18 red, 2 green zeros = 38. European Roulette = 18 black, 18 Red, 1 green zero = 37.
    • What are the red spaces on a roulette wheel? 1,3,5,7,9,12,14,16,19,21,23,25,27,30,32,34,36
